Telluride got its name from a train conductor bellowing “To Hell You Ride” as the Rio Grande Railway trundled into town in the late 1890’s!
The Telluride ski area is one of the most spectacular ski areas you will find anywhere, surrounded by 14,000 ft (4.500m) peaks. Tucked away in the San Juan mountain ranges in South West Colorado, you will find a charming 1800’s gold mining town with old Victorian architecture and stucco buildings….It still looks like it did in the 1880’s, just like a scene out of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”.
Throw in some fabulous restaurants (my favourites are Cosmo, Hongas, Rustico and Siam) some funky country and western bars, including the 19th century “Sheridan Bar”, “The Buck” (Last Dollar Saloon) and “The Brown Dog”, plenty of live entertainment, a classic old cinema and a nineteenth century opera house, lots of fun and interesting shops and you have the makings of a funky town full of character.
Telluride Is In Fact Two Towns….
The old nineteenth century gold mining town at the end of a spectacular box canyon and the modern ski-in, ski-out Mountain Village, connected by an eight person gondola that links the two towns.
- If you and your family are looking for ski-in, ski-out convenience, Mountain Village with its complex plazas and pleasing architecture would be a good choice. Positioned right by the main chair lift (chair 4) and ski school, it is as simple as stepping outside your door to get you skiing, if you stay near Heritage Plaza. Almost all parts of mountain village have direct ski-in, ski-out access to the slopes.
- Telluride Town itself is full of interesting bars, live music venues, restaurants, and fun and diverse shopping. If that is your scene, Telluride might be a good place to hang out for your ski week. The ski area is easily accessed via the gondola or chair 8 from the center of town or chair 7 on the outskirts, and the friendly Galloping Goose bus service will take you there from most parts of town, if you are not within walking distance.
Telluride is the ideal ski destination for everyone, from beginner skier, to expert powder hound or bumps fanatic. Families, couples or singles will all feel equally at home in this fabulous town and ski area. For more information on the ski area, head over to my “Alternative Guide to Telluride”
